The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland has strongly denied reports alleging the presence of foreign or non-Somaliland forces in the Awdal Region, describing the claims as false and misleading. In a press release issued from Hargeisa on 26 January 2026, the Ministry categorically rejected information circulated by Al Arabiya that suggested external forces were operating in the region.
According to the statement, Awdal remains fully under the sovereign authority of the Republic of Somaliland, with security and stability maintained exclusively by Somaliland’s nationally mandated armed forces. The Ministry emphasized that there are no other military or armed entities present in the region beyond those officially recognized under Somaliland’s constitutional and legal framework.
The government warned that the dissemination of unverified and inaccurate reports risks creating unnecessary tension and confusion, both domestically and internationally. It stressed that such reporting undermines facts on the ground and fails to reflect the reality of governance and security in Somaliland.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Al Arabiya and other media outlets to immediately correct the inaccurate information and to adhere strictly to professional journalistic standards, including verification from credible and official sources. The statement reaffirmed Somaliland’s commitment to transparency, regional stability, and responsible engagement with international media, while underscoring its determination to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against misinformation.
