11 Aug, 2025 - The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has warmly welcomed and praised U.S. President Donald J. Trump following his recent public statements indicating a willingness to consider the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), and translated by the SOLNA news agency, Somaliland’s Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Hussein Adan Cige (known as Hussein Deyr), expressed deep appreciation for President Trump’s visionary leadership and his commitment to enhancing the partnership between Somaliland and the United States.
“On behalf of the President and the entire Government of the Republic of Somaliland, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to President Donald J. Trump. We highly commend his foresight and decisive actions aimed at strengthening the collaboration between our two nations,” said Mr. Hussein Deyr.
He further emphasized that President Trump’s recent remarks demonstrate a clear recognition of Somaliland’s significant contributions to peace, democracy, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa region over the past 34 years. “In his speech on August 8, 2025, President Trump acknowledged Somaliland’s steadfast dedication to peace, democratic governance, and progress. His words shine a light on the important role Somaliland continues to play in safeguarding regional stability and advancing economic growth across the Horn of Africa,” Mr. Deyr stated.
The Presidential Spokesperson also conveyed gratitude to the broader United States government, highlighting its principled partnership and acknowledgment of Somaliland’s accomplishments. He pointed out that the United States has consistently reaffirmed a shared strategic vision that unites both countries.
“The leadership demonstrated by President Trump, combined with ongoing support from the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Department of Defense, has significantly reinforced the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect between the peoples of Somaliland and the United States,” Mr. Deyr noted.
