Hargeisa, 18 August 2025 – The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has officially summoned the General Consul of the Republic of Türkiye in Hargeisa, following a recent diplomatic development that has raised serious concerns within Somaliland’s leadership.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the summons comes in response to reports that the Turkish Ambassador in Mogadishu held a meeting with an individual who has been actively engaged in hostile actions against Somaliland.
The Ministry described the incident as “deeply troubling and unacceptable,” emphasizing that such actions undermine the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of Somaliland and risk damaging the foundations of mutual respect and cooperation between Somaliland and Türkiye.
“The Government of Somaliland views this engagement as a direct affront to our sovereignty and security, and one that could contribute to further instability in the Horn of Africa,” the Ministry said.
Somaliland’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Abdirahman, conveyed to the Turkish General Consul that the Government demands a formal and urgent explanation from Ankara regarding the matter. He further stressed that Somaliland will not tolerate any actions that compromise its national interests or attempt to delegitimize its statehood.
The statement concluded by reaffirming Somaliland’s commitment to constructive international relations, while making it clear that respect for its sovereignty remains non-negotiable.
This latest diplomatic move underscores the firm stance of Somaliland’s government in defending its political independence and regional stability amid shifting dynamics in the Horn of Africa.
