August 1, 2025 – Hargeisa – the government of the Republic of Somaliland has escalated its response to mounting tensions in the eastern regions of Sool and Sanaag, as President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro today chaired an extraordinary cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa. The emergency session was also attended by Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi and focused on responding to what officials described as direct interference and destabilization efforts orchestrated by the Somali Federal Government.
In a strong statement released following the session, the Council of Ministers unanimously condemned the recent actions of the Mogadishu administration, accusing it of deliberately provoking conflict and attempting to impose clan-based divisions in areas historically, geographically, and politically part of Somaliland. The statement warned of the grave consequences that may result from what it called “blatant interference and incitement of tribal conflict” by the federal authorities in Somalia.
Sources close to the meeting say the government is now considering a series of defense and diplomatic measures aimed at countering what it views as an existential threat to Somaliland’s sovereignty. Military readiness along key areas of the eastern frontier has reportedly been heightened. Although specific details remain classified, officials confirmed that all branches of government are now operating under an enhanced state of coordination.
The cabinet’s warning comes amid increasing reports that the Somali Federal Government is backing the newly reasserted SSC-Khatumo faction in Las Anod — a group that Somaliland considers unconstitutional and a destabilizing force in the region. Government officials claim that Villa Somalia’s involvement includes funding, propaganda support, and possibly plans for military reinforcement, which Somaliland sees as a red line.
Speaking to the press, Presidential Spokesperson Xuseen Aadan Cige (Deyr) emphasized that the actions being taken are part of Somaliland’s sovereign right to protect its people and territorial integrity. “This government is alert, unified, and determined. The people of Somaliland will not stand by silently while our nation’s unity is challenged,” he said. He further stated that any attempt to redraw borders or interfere in internal affairs would be met with unwavering resistance.
The government’s response reflects growing public concern over the situation in Las Anod and surrounding districts, where tensions have risen sharply. Residents report increased security presence and community mobilization, while civil society organizations have called for calm and national solidarity in the face of external threats.
President Irro, who assumed office earlier this year, now faces his most serious test as head of state. Many political observers believe this crisis will define not only his leadership but also the future of Somaliland’s pursuit of international recognition. While diplomatic appeals are expected to be made to regional bodies such as IGAD and the African Union, the tone from today’s meeting was clear: Somaliland is prepared to defend itself by any means necessary.
